SAINT MARY’S ACADEMY 75TH
ANNIVERSARY PHOTO ALBUM
Painted in bold letters on the secondary school
wall are the Latin words “ORA ET LABORA” which means “pray and work”. These
words have been embellished in the memory
of many graduating achievers. The new school building
was opened in the early 1960’s on Turkey
Lane, Roseau, Dominica and replaced the old
building that still stands on Virgin
Lane across from the Roman Catholic Bishop’s
residence.
The year 2007, marks the 75th
Anniversary of Saint Mary’s Academy, a school for secondary education that was
founded in 1932 by the Christian Brothers of Ireland
who were based in New Rochelle,
New York.
The photo album contains over 200 photos of
students from the 1960’s and 1970’s. It is dedicated to Brother Stevens in
recognition of his excellence as a Math teacher and his distinguished
contribution to SMA and Dominica
Basketball during the 1960’s and 1970’s. There are other photos of panoramic
scenery of Dominica and of distinguished visitors like Sir Garfield Sobers who
played Basketball at the SMA school grounds, and also the Royal couple, Queen
Elizabeth and Prince Phillip during their trip,
in that era. Many of the photos include prominent men who have had
distinguished careers over the years, after graduating from SMA. We owe our many thanks to Brother Stevens for
most of the photos and for making this album possible.
The sale of the photo album is coordinated
with photographer and teacher, Mr. McFord Zamore, an alumnus of SMA (class of
1967) and a former Dominica
and Windward Islands Star Cricket player. Most
of the photos are numbered and a list of names is provided. With your purchase,
a contribution will be forwarded to SMA for roof and classroom repairs. Upon
